More artwork from Fury of the Forsaken

Draugar on a longship

Ksenia Kozhevnikova is an amazing artist whose work features heavily in Fury of the Forsaken, the book length Thrones & Bones adventure on Kickstarter now. Today I want to share more of her fabulous art with you all. We'll look at another bird's eye view of the Viking lake town of Frekrheim and then show off some great character pieces.

In a previous post, we shared some of artist Ksenia's process as she creates these overviews of the town. She broke the illustration's creation down to the following stages: thumbnails, 3D mockup, sketch pass to design, and final render.

Here is another cityscape that Ksenia has created. This one depicts the jarl's longhouse. Ksenia followed her aforementioned process, but with a little change. In her words, "The big difference for this environment is that since I already had 3D created, I picked a dramatic point in Blender instead of going through a round of black and white thumbnails and doing guesswork." She then added circling ravens "to establish jarl's personality."

We had four perspectives to choose from. We liked #2 best, not least of the reasons for this being that as a lake town, showcasing the longship and the water helps establish setting and tone.

Four color roughs showing possible "camera" angles.

Here is the 3D render. This is built using Rob Lazzaretti's incredible location map, so each building you see here corresponds exactly to one on the map. This means that not only the placement but the distance between buildings is perfectly aligned with the town map. How's that for consistency and authenticity?

And the final illustration:

The finished artwork depicting a longhouse on a wooden platform above a lake. Other houses cluster nearby and there is a longship in the water.

Now let's meet some of the characters who inhabit Frekrheim and its surrounds.

This is Gertrude, a hunter who works the Raven's Wood north of Frekrheim. In ourFury of the Forsaken actual play, she graduated from NPC to character when our player Kenzi stepped into the role. (Good thing we already had art!)

Next up is a cowardly troll that might be encountered on the journey to the lake town.

A troll with a fearful expression

Meet Cheery Ófeigr who runs the most popular mead hall in Frekrheim. His name is obviously a bit of sarcasm, but his mead is very good.

A grumpy man with a black cat on his shoulders.

Here is a grizzled old warrior who spends his time drinking and reliving past glories. But maybe future glories lie ahead, if he can put down his drinking horn.

Blond norse warrior wielding an axe.

I hope you've enjoyed this peak behind the curtain and are as excited for Fury of the Forsaken as we are. We funded last week, but if you haven't checked out the Kickstarter campaign I hope you'll do so now, and help us take it even further.

And check out more of Ksenia Kozhevnikova's work on ArtStation.
