Presenting Tales from Stolki's Hall
And welcome to the new Substack!!
Greetings!
If you’re an existing subscriber to my newsletter, you’ll notice that I’m migrating to Substack. I’m still finding my feet on this platform, but I’m liking the potential to interact with followers in a more meaningful way than the previous newsletter service allowed. I’m also curious to see if being here will make me more literary minded and less “by my booky.” I suspect I’ll gradually drift into sharing some writing and game designing tips from time to time in this space (if that’s something you’d like to see.)

If you’re new to my newsletter, welcome. I’m Lou Anders. I’m a former award-winning SF&F editor turned children’s book author turned tabletop roleplaying game designer. I’m the creator of the Thrones & Bones fantasy series (Penguin Random House) and its accompanying roleplaying game (Lazy Wolf Studios). At present, the RPG offerings are all focused on the Norse-inspired land of Norrøngard and designed for the 5th edition of the world’s greatest roleplaying game (dee and dee). That’s changing soon as Thrones & Bones is expanding into other systems and other areas of my world of Qualth beyond the northern land.
It’s also about to expand in another fun way. The game inspired by books is now inspiring a new book! After nine years away, I’m putting my editor hat back on and embarking on a new journey.
Tales from Stolki's Hall is a first—the first Thrones & Bones short story anthology. Eleven amazing authors have penned ten short stories (one of them is a husband-wife team) set in the land of Norrøngard. This marks the first time writers other than Yours Truly have penned Thrones & Bones fiction, and it also marks the first Thrones & Bones fiction written for adults. (Frostborn came out in 2014 so some of my original readers are adults now.)
Tales from Stolki's Hall is an adult fantasy fiction anthology, deepening the lore and further exploring the land of Norrøngard. The plan is to release an ebook in ePub format, a trade hardcover, and then a special "Deluxe Gamer Edition" that will be in full color, with illustrations, and an appendix of mechanics for some of the magic items and monsters in the story. This Gamer Edition will be released in PDF and RPG-sized hardcover, so it will match your other Thrones & Bones game books on your shelf.
The anthology is for fans of the books, fans of the games, fans of fantasy fiction, fans of Norse mythology, and any fan of a good story. Because it has a lot of those, with stories that range from humorous to grim, heartfelt to horrifying!
The Kickstarter is coming in May, and the pre-launch page is already up. So sign up to be notified when this puppy goes live, because it is an amazing book. (And I can say that without being immodest, because I didn’t write it.)
Here’s a cross section of the cover illustration, drawn by the amazing William O’Brien. The four central figures are actually the characters in my home D&D game, while the people in the background are NPCs pulled from previous game books. Easter Eggs a plenty!

That’s it for now. I’m still poking around in here, figuring out how the gears work. I promise not to message too frequently, and I’ll try to make sure there’s always something interesting to say. Thanks for following!
