The protagonist is a character who wants something they can’t have. And the protagonist is a character who needs something they won’t acknowledge. They have a problem, and they don’t want to admit it. And this is true for every film.

Except where it isn’t.

Today, we’re going to talk about the Superhero Exception.

Now, right off, let me say that for the most part in today’s superhero-dominated box-office, this exception doesn’t occur very often. But it did at one time, and you still see examples of it in cinema from time to time.

And looking at the Superhero Exception is a neat way to talk about how you can slide things around on your triangle and still create a plot that resonates with audiences.
